How to Choose a Donation Platform for Your Nonprofit
The donation page is the most important page a fundraising organization owns. Choosing what runs it decides how much of your effort survives the click.
Most donation platforms look alike on a feature grid. They all take payments, they all produce a page, and they all promise to be easy. The differences that matter show up months later, in whether recurring gifts quietly erode, whether you can answer who gave last year but not this year, and whether donors on phones actually complete the form.
This guide covers what to evaluate, in the order it will affect you.
What to evaluate
The criteria that actually separate these tools
Payment processing and who absorbs the fees
Understand the full cost: platform fee, processing fee, and whether either is charged to you or offered to the donor. Offering more than one payment route matters more than it appears, because some supporters will not enter card details but will use a wallet or an account they already trust.
Recurring giving as a first-class feature
Monthly donors are the most valuable revenue a fundraising organization has. Recurring should be presented on the donation form itself, not on a separate page, and donors should be able to manage or pause their own gift without emailing you.
Failed payment recovery
This is the detail that separates platforms and almost nobody asks about it. Cards expire and get replaced. Without automatic retries, expiry warnings, and a direct link for the donor to update their card, monthly income erodes without anyone deciding to leave.
A donor record, not just a transaction log
Payment processors record charges. Fundraising requires people: total given, first gift, most recent gift, whether they are recurring. If the platform cannot show a giving history per person, thanking and reporting become manual work forever.
Receipting that happens immediately
A receipt is the first thing a donor receives from you and is often needed for their records. It should send instantly, contain what your jurisdiction requires, and read as a thank you rather than only as a document.
Currency and geography
If supporters give from abroad, check currency support early. Asking a donor to mentally convert, or presenting an unfamiliar currency at the moment of payment, adds friction exactly where gifts are lost.
Where the donor actually gives
Redirecting a supporter to an unfamiliar domain mid-gift breaks the sense that they are giving to you. Being able to embed the flow in your own site, under your own branding, is worth more than it sounds.
Warning signs
What should give you pause
None of these are disqualifying on their own. Each one is a question worth asking before you sign anything.
