The way people find products is changing. Instead of typing a keyword into a search box and scanning ten blue links, buyers increasingly ask an assistant a full question and read one synthesized answer. That answer names a few brands. Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making sure your brand is one of them.
If you sell anything that gets researched before purchase, your buyers are already doing this. They ask ChatGPT which tool fits their use case, they ask Perplexity to compare two vendors, and they read the AI Overview that Google now places above the classic results. In each case a model decides what to say and which sources to credit. GEO is how you influence that decision.
What Generative Engine Optimization is
GEO is the set of content, structure, and data practices that make a brand more likely to be retrieved, understood, and cited by generative answer engines. Where classic SEO tries to rank a URL on a results page, GEO tries to make your facts the ones a model reaches for when it writes an answer, whether or not your link is ever shown.
GEO and SEO are not the same job
The two disciplines share DNA, but the target has moved. It helps to see the differences plainly.
- Traditional SEO ranks a page. GEO earns a mention inside an answer that may never show your link at all.
- SEO optimizes around keywords. GEO optimizes around entities, claims, and facts a model can lift and trust.
- SEO competes for one of ten results on a page. GEO competes to be one of two or three sources a model chooses to synthesize.
- SEO traffic arrives with a referrer you can measure. GEO influence often happens invisibly, inside the model, before the buyer ever clicks.
The disciplines overlap. Strong, well-structured, trustworthy content still helps both. But the tactics that win a citation are not identical to the ones that win a ranking, and treating them as the same is why many brands are invisible in AI answers today.
How answer engines decide what to cite
Models are trained on a snapshot of the web and, increasingly, retrieve live sources at answer time. To be chosen you have to be both retrievable and trustworthy. In practice that rewards a few specific things.
- Clear, self-contained claims a model can quote without guessing at the surrounding context.
- Structured data that states who you are and what you do in a machine-readable form.
- Corroboration, meaning the same facts about you appear consistently across your site and the wider web.
- Freshness, so the model is not answering from a stale snapshot of your category.
- Retrievability, so your important pages are crawlable and your canonical facts are easy to find.
A practical GEO playbook
You do not need to rebuild your site. You need to make your facts explicit, structured, and consistent. Start here.
1) Write answer-first content
Lead each page with the answer, then support it. Models favor content that states a conclusion plainly in the first few sentences, because that is the part they can quote cleanly. Burying the point under three paragraphs of preamble is good storytelling and bad GEO.
2) Make your claims specific and quotable
Vague marketing copy is unquotable. "Trusted by teams everywhere" tells a model nothing it can repeat. "A product analytics platform for B2B SaaS teams, with a free tier and usage-based pricing" can be lifted straight into an answer. Specific, checkable claims travel further than adjectives.
3) Add structured data
Structured data, written as schema.org JSON-LD, tells engines who you are, what you sell, and how your content is organized, without making them infer it from prose. At a minimum, describe your organization and your most common questions.
4) Publish an llms.txt
Just as robots.txt guides search crawlers, an llms.txt file gives AI systems a plain, canonical summary of your business and links to the facts you want them to use. It is one of the simplest GEO wins available today, and most sites do not have one yet.
5) Build corroboration
A model trusts a fact it sees confirmed in several independent places. Keep your description, your category, and your key claims consistent across your site, your profiles, and third-party listings. Contradictions make you a risky citation, and a risky citation is one the model leaves out.
6) Measure which engines cite you, and close the gaps
GEO without measurement is guesswork. You need to see, engine by engine, whether you are mentioned, whether the facts are right, and whether you are recommended.
