Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend a tool in your category and it will answer with confidence, naming a few brands and describing each in a sentence or two. Some of those descriptions are right. Some are outdated. Some belong to competitors who did nothing except make themselves easier for the model to understand. Either way, the answer is being handed to your buyers, with or without you.
Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the discipline of reading those answers, measuring where you stand in them, and improving them. If generative engine optimization is how you get cited, AEO is how you know whether it is working.
What Answer Engine Optimization means
AEO treats AI assistants as a measurable channel. Instead of tracking rankings for keywords, you track how you appear inside generated answers across the engines your buyers actually use. The unit of measurement is not a position on a page. It is whether, and how, a model talks about you.
The three questions AEO answers
- Are you mentioned at all when buyers ask about your category?
- Is what the model says about you accurate and current?
- When the model recommends someone, is it you, or a competitor?
Why your analytics cannot see this
A conversation inside ChatGPT leaves no entry in your analytics. There is often no click, no referrer, and no session. The buyer gets their answer and forms an opinion before they ever reach your site.
- No referrer: recommendations happen inside the model, not on a results page you can track.
- No query log: you cannot see what buyers asked or how you were described.
- Different answers per engine: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini can each say something different about you.
- Drift over time: an answer that was accurate last month can silently go stale.
How to track your AI visibility
1) Define the questions your buyers actually ask
Start from intent, not keywords. Think in full questions: "what is the best tool for this job", "how does this brand compare to that one", "is this worth it", "what are the alternatives". These are the prompts that decide purchases, so these are the ones to measure.
2) Ask them across every major engine
The engines do not agree with each other. You need coverage across OpenAI ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and xAI Grok, because your buyers are spread across all of them and each model has been shaped by different data and retrieval.
3) Score more than presence
- Mention: were you named at all?
- Accuracy: were the facts about you correct?
- Sentiment: were you described favorably, neutrally, or with a caveat?
- Recommendation: were you the suggested choice, or an also-ran in a longer list?
4) Watch it over time, not once
A single snapshot is a curiosity. A trend is actionable. Models update, your content changes, and competitors publish, so visibility moves. Track it on a cadence and you can tell whether a change you made actually shifted the answer.
5) Alert on inaccuracies
The highest-value alert is a wrong fact: a model claiming you lack a feature you have, or quoting a price you retired two years ago. Those errors cost deals silently, because the buyer never argues with the assistant. They just move on. Catch them quickly and correct the sources feeding them.
From measurement to improvement
Tracking tells you where you stand. Fixing it is generative engine optimization: structured data, quotable claims, corroboration, and freshness. The two are one loop, measure then fix then measure again. Our GEO guide covers the fix side in detail.
Where SearchLift fits
SearchLift runs this loop as a product. You define the questions that matter, and it checks them across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok on a schedule, scoring mention, accuracy, and recommendation, and alerting you when a model gets you wrong. It then ties each gap back to a fix on your site, so measurement turns into action instead of a report nobody reads.
Start with ten questions
You do not need a program to begin. Write down the ten questions a serious buyer asks before choosing in your category. Ask each one to the major engines today, and note honestly whether you show up and whether the answer is right. That list is your first AEO report, and for most brands it is a wake-up call.
AI assistants have quietly become a recommendation engine sitting between you and your buyers. You cannot opt out of being described by them, but you can decide to measure it. Pair this with our generative engine optimization guide to close the gaps you find, explore SearchLift to automate the whole loop, or talk to our team to have it run for you.
